BRIEF
To design a bespoke typeface influenced by a piece of architecture.
WHAT WE DID
Designed a typeface called 'Causeway' based on the Giant's Causeway Visitor's Centre. I wanted to combine the aspect of the visitor's journey and the blocked structure of the building into a typeface.
RESULT | CONTEXT
The Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre is based in Ireland. The building's purpose is to give the history of the Giant's Causeway and to be a welcoming place for visitors to have a break, whether that's eating or going to the gift shop.
The building's structure mimics the Giant's Causeway by using the same basalt material and blending the building into the natural environment, as you can't see the structure from far away.
I chose to explore the idea of the blocked structure and use three stems of thickness to link to how each stem of the building is a different size. I also wanted to reference to the visitor's journey, which I explored by adding curves and movement into the typeface. I looked at the idea of carving the counter space out of blocks of clay to reference the narrow windows.
